Keely describes herselft as a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to fashion. It wasn’t until her mid-late twenties that she saw clothes as something more than just practical personal items. It was once she started working in TV (on shows like Australia’s Next Top Model!) that she discovered the joys of fashion – how different clothes can make you feel, how incredible some of the workmanship can be, how fashion allows you to make personal statements about yourself, how creativity is at the heart of it all, but also how not to lose your individuality to fashion trends.
Keely, an extreme multi-tasker, is someone who loves to have a lot of projects on the go, because being creative and learning is something that feeds her fashionista soul. She is also the co-founder of State of Shop, which of course makes her an avid online shopper and in-the-know about the best and most beautiful fashion out there.
For Keely, fashion should always be something that’s fun and makes you feel good and she advises all the women out there should experiment and discover what they love through trial and error.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
All I knew was that I wanted a job that would pay me to travel… I thought that meant I would be an Air Hostess, but as it turns out working in television and having an online business has given me the opportunity to visit some incredible places around Australia and the world. So it all worked out just fine.
Now what do I want to be when I grow up? I think I’m doing it… writing, creating, making television, meeting people, and travelling. I’d also quite like to live in New York at least once in my life, so perhaps when I grow up I can be everything I am while living in Greenwich Village.
What do you most love about your state/ country?
I am so proud to be Australian, and love showing off our country. Apart from our laid back culture, incredible landscapes, exquisite food and wine, and endless summers the thing that makes me most proud is the way Aussies open their arms, hearts and homes to others.
Describe your style? Who inspires your look?
Functional, evolving and sometimes a little questionable. By day I need to wear clothes that are practical out on location, which means I own a lot of jeans and shirts. And then I usually mix it up in the shoe department – it’s surprising how creative you can be with boots and trainers. I’m usually inspired by where I am and what the locals are wearing.
How, where & with who do you like to shop?
I do 95% of my shopping by myself, online, but it’s not as sad as it sounds. I’m constantly on the Internet researching different stores for STATE OF SHOP and sharing that information with others, so it’s only natural that some of that ‘research’ would find its way into my wardrobe too.
What are the 5 most worn items in your closet?
White Suede skinny jeans, Levi’s boyfriend jeans, All Saints ankle boots, Camilla kaftan, Bec and Bridge leather bomber.
Is there a trend you think (your state/ country) has adapted well? Why?
I live in Bondi, Sydney, and love the mix of people and cultures that are drawn to the area – the people watching is incredible. I’ve come to the conclusion that there are very few places in the world that can pull off the sexy/glowing/stylish/boho beach babe look that Bondi embodies every summer.
Finish the sentence…
Date night: jeans, heels and – leather jacket.
The item in my wardrobe I cherish the most is – my new Deadly Ponies bag. It’s the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning.
My most extravagant purchase was – my first pair of designer heels – black Christian Louboutin’s
Looking back, my bigger fashion fail was – buying said pair of Louboutin’s a size too small so they’re torture to wear for any longer than 2 minutes – they’ve only made it out of the box once!
Any look’s not complete without – the perfect shoe.
The hottest look for this season is – white, white, white.
My Fav fashion designer is – impossible to single out. I dream about Balmain, Alexander McQueen and Saint Laurent, but my reality is more Camilla, Helmut Lang and Sass and Bide (all are equally loved and coveted).
