According to Sacha Drake (Designer and Director) Queensland is home to some of Australia’s most creative and independent thinking people. This week from the 24th – 29th August, Brisbane is a flurry with fashion as Queensland designers and retailers come together with media and industry insiders to show-case the unique and creative talents that the state has to offer as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane
Mercedes Benz Fashion week certainly creates a fashion induced flutter for it’s stylish devotees and yet amongst the drawing of style hunters and gatherers from every corner of the city, air kisses and the sipping of cocktails and champagne, there is a serious side to the festival and that is the incredible platform it provides for both new and established Queensland designers.
This opportunity perhaps held in the highest esteem by those participating in the Emerging Designer Group Show, where up and coming designers, some of who will no doubt be among the future influencers and dictators of fashion in Australia, the opportunity to showcase their talent.
Not only is it a a surreal moment where their dreams are being realised, but it is their opportunity to be noticed and for their designs to be taken seriously.
In it’s 9th year, 2014’s line up of Emerging designers included Begitta, Otim Ajalia, A Jacksonian Era, Peony, Emu Designs, Stokes Thompson Designs and Crowd favourites Suzii K, Erin Hassall and Anna Hulm.
Each with their own unique offering, there seemed to be a merging of the Quintessential Australian lifestyle with fashionable nods to diversity in culture and heritage that is also uniquely Australian. A sense of play and freedom, easy relaxed glamour and down to earth effortless style. Even where there was luxury there was a sense of ease that coexisted in the designs.
