It was flare, fringe and nostalgia that brought David Jones and Spring Racing together for the Spring Carnival 2015 fashion parade in Melbourne last Monday. This season rules were broken, as hem lines rose and midriffs were exposed. A sight rarely seen, the fashion of Spring Racing 2015 kept audiences’ wide-eyed and on edge.

Barely there: Slightly exposed midriffs grasped all eyes at the David Jones Spring Carnival Runway

Kick starting Melbourne’s Spring Fashion Week, David Jones brought lace, feathers and gold staple jewellery to audiences’ attention. The luxury department pushed boundaries on the catwalk, as models sashayed along the stage in cut out midi dresses and thigh-high dress splits.

Makeup was kept to a minimum, as models beamed with glowing faces and variations of nude and natural-looking coverage. Wardrobe colours and patterns however were prominent, with designers propelling models down the runway in wide-leg trousers and bell sleeves for the official launch of Spring Racing.

Garments were showcased from prominent David Jones designers including Carla Zampatti, camilla and marc, Dion Lee, Ellery and Lover.

Millinery on display included wide-brimmed hats and feathered fascinators, from designers such as Gregory Ladner, Max Alexander, Neill Grigg and Suzy O’Rourke.

Famous faces who sat front row included stylist Lana Wilkinson and fashion blogger Nadia Bartel. The conclusion of winter brought about a bright, clear day for new season carnival fashion at The Hub in Melbourne.

This spring racing forecast is all about flare, coloured suits and metallic-gold chunky jewellery. Fashion Stylish Lana Wilkinson commented on this years racewear, stating “In terms of styles, the ‘70s is back with a vengeance.”

“Shorty shorts and dresses are out. If they’re in, make sure they’ve got a sleeve,” Wilkinson said.

Out go the conventional pieces of regulation racewear- Spring Carnival 2015 has hauled the 70’s back, returning with a risqué twist that is sure to turn heads.
