Kookai showcased their Autumn/Winter ’16 collection at Royal Exhibition Building last night, with a range of must-have, effortlessly wearable pieces all with that sexy, feminine Kookai signature.

Neutral hues created the foundation for beautiful silk and wool textures amongst oversized jackets, mini length skirts, bell sleeves and sleek drop crotch trousers that will be wardrobe essentials all year round.

We caught up with Kookai’s Creative Director and Co-Founder Danielle Vagner to tell us the inspiration behind the range and what we can expect from the upcoming collections…

What was the inspiration behind the Kookai AW16 collection?

This collection in particular is inspired by the Kookai girl. We recently had Margret Zhang shoot our campaign in some of Melbourne’s most iconic buildings such as The Manchester Unity Building, Nicholas Building and the Forum. These places have such rich history and decadent features it just made sense to bring the campaign home this year.

What’s your favourite aspect of the range?

I would say how elegant and wearable it is. This season we have used versatile fabrics that have the ability to go from day to night depending on how they are accessorised. You will see this season we have used silk prints, suedes, leathers, wools and lace -all fabrics that, with the right pair of heels, can take you from desk to bar.

Your top 3 essentials for the season?

Easy! For shoes I love the Vanessa Tie Up Boots because they are so versatile. You can make them look vintage, retro or modern. The Streamer Dress I wore last night is another favourite of mine, because its feminine and sexy, yet sophisticated as well. Also a major essential this collection is the neck tie. The one I wore for the show I actually made 20 years ago.

Who’s your style inspiration?

The person that first and still inspires me is my mother. My mother used to make her own clothes and I used to sit on the bed and watch her style and accessorise and that’s where my love of fashion really grew from. As I grew up, I would say Carine Roitfeld. She is elegant and imaginative. When she describes something you don’t need to see it because she so vividly paints a picture with her words and prose. She has also remained relevant for such a long time and I think you can only do this if you are exceptional.

What can we expect to see more of in the upcoming collections?

We will always be influenced by current trends, however we also like to surprise our customer with new silhouettes, fabrics and colours. You can expect the unexpected and to find something for everyone.
