When Pitch Perfect 2 came out last month, my friends and I (along with seemingly the entire rest of the female population) organised a girls night at the movies and took ourselves out to see it. In between all of the laughter and sing-alongs, I found myself asking the question “When did Hailee Steinfeld grow up?!” Surely it was only last year that she was the little girl in True Grit with the black hat and braids?
A quick Google search tells me that I must have a truly terrible sense of time; True Grit was 5 years ago and Steinfeld is now 18, with legs up to her neck, a beautiful smile, an impeccably brave sense of fashion and a cameo among the rest of Hollywood’s ‘it’ girls and fashion elite in Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood film clip.
Looking back at Steinfeld’s style over the 5 years since she rose to fame, her style has evolved from cute, quirky and age appropriate to daring, adventurous and high fashion with barely a misstep in between. She is willowy, she is exotic looking (due to her mother’s Filipino lineage) and she isn’t afraid to play with a little bit of whimsy, which has kept an element of youth throughout her style evolution. She was never a 14 year old trying desperately to grow up, nor is shoe now an 18 year old trying to dress like she’s 28.
Steinfeld’s monochromes, muted tones and sweet sundresses have always come in second place to her love of the quirky and whimsical, such as step and repeat patterns of eyes and sequinned lip embellishments, perfect for injecting a little bit of fun into events such as film premiers and Comic Con.
Even as she has developed into an adult, Hailee Steinfeld has managed to keep a youthful elegance about her. At an age now where she could opt for plunging necklines and short hemlines, she carries herself with more of a ladylike grace than many starlets who are far older than her. She is measured in the way she dresses, not to the extent of being frumpy or prudish, but always dressed in a way that incites interest.
From the little braided girl in True Grit to the legacy pledge in Pitch Perfect 2, Hailee Steinfeld, and her personal style, have matured beautifully.
Never too old or too young, always event appropriate and never taking herself too seriously, Steinfeld has managed to cement herself as one to watch in Hollywood and on it’s red carpets.
