Although its members will try desperately to have you think otherwise, change in the fashion world is not always readily welcomed. So when announcements were made that New York would have its own fashion week dedicated solely to menswear, complaints were sounded, loud and clear. “Not another fashion week. More travel. More time. More taxis. More traffic.”……apparently travelling the world, fashion week to fashion week, is a really hard life. First world problems indeed!
Well, you buyers, creative directors and front-row sitters of the fashion world, suck it up. The industry is having a boom like never before and New York City wants to flex its menswear muscle. And the muscle it flexed was well worthy of our attention.
What did New York possess that it’s three big brothers (London, Milan & Paris) lacked? Diversity. If New York Fashion Week: Men’s showed the world anything, it was the incredible range not only of the seniority of the designers themselves (the variance in notoriety for indie newcomers like Timo Weiland against veterans like Polo Ralph Lauren is sizable) , but also of the wares that were presented.
You wanted some feminine masculinity? Look to the sheer blouses, washed stripes and flowing belted trousers of Duckie Brown. Still enjoying sports-luxe? Head to the dewy-faced boys layered in nylon and mesh bombers, tone-on-tone hoodies and utilitarian cargo shorts of John Elliott + Co. Classic Tailoring more your thing?
Tommy Hilfiger cut suits that sat as sharp as the jawlines of the models that donned them. Or perhaps you’re chasing California beach vibes that swept through a good part of the Paris shows a fortnight prior – Billy Reid has you covered with the softest tweeds, the laziest open shirts and most buttery of suede jackets rendered in organic shades of cream, earth and oatmeal.
Whatever you desired, NYFW:M had it. Watching New York cement their position in the menswear world will be exciting to say the least.
