The stylist of the provocative and infamous film American Psycho literally killed it.
The film based on the highly acclaimed novel written by Bret Easton Ellis—the protagonist being Patrick Bateman—played by Christian Bale, is a wealthy, well dressed serial killer with a smidge of sociopathic tendencies.
Bateman being a fictional character; is an Ivy League-educated, Wall Street financier. He displays vanity, avaricious behaviour and is emotionally bankrupt. He suffers from a drug habit that puts him in a tainted temper. Oh, he is also a violent sadist who gouges out eyeballs and hacks people to bits in a series of gruesome murders.
Okay! Pop-culture lesson is over, now to the fashion.
Patrick Batemans’ whole demeanour is projected through the luxuries of expensive clothes and items he possesses. Here are my reasons to why he’s the most stylish fictional serial killer of all time.
Lavish, clean-cut attire:
Bateman has an amazing collection of slick, sharp suits and expensive bold ties. Within the first 50 pages of the novel, Bateman has a collection of heavyweight international designer outfits; ranging from, Ermenegildo Zegna men’s silk suit, Ike Behar cotton shirt with French cuffs, Tumi calfskin attache case and his love for Ralph Lauren and Hermès. Bateman is never found to be sloppy in his appearance—wearing shirts that are either plain or striped in a variety of blues, whites and greens, sometimes with a contrasting white collar. His ties are in a range of jewel tones—from reds to green and sometimes even yellow, with classic yet witty patterns.
He has an acquired taste for all things lavish and expensive, whether it’s his Panasonic Walkman or Ceralene coffee cup; Bateman does live a prolific life style of excess. Even though it’s projected as a vain and materialistic lifestyle, but you can’t deny he’s one stylish man.
He has an immaculate skin care routine and of course the best skin care products. This is evident within the novel when Bateman takes the reader through his perfect procedure. Bateman’s products include A Deep Pore Cleanser Lotion; Water activated Gel Cleanser, A Honey Almond Body Scrub and an Exfoliating Gel Scrub. To finish his routine Bateman uses a Herbal Mint Mask, and to shave he refuses to use any aftershave with any alcohol, to reduce ageing and dried out skin.
Personal hygiene is so important and this fictional character displays this, which encourages men to be shameless and comfortable to look their very best. While it abolishes the stereotypical flamboyant stigma attached to men; when wanting to look presentable.
It’s very evident that Patrick Bateman has played a massive influence on the male style and the importance to be presentable, giving men the confidence to be proud of hygiene and the clothes we hide behind.
