When Anna Kendrick showed up to the Oscars this past weekend in custom Thakoon, I knew I had to write about her. Not only because she is the inimitably cool Beca from Pitch Perfect (and I just know you’re all as excited about Pitch Perfect 2 as I am!), but because I’ve been watching her for a while and as her star has risen, so too has her style. Her recent red carpet appearances, from the Into the Woods premiers and throughout all of awards season have positioned her as one to watch in celebrity style, culminating in the perfectly styled peach gown on Oscar night.
In terms of big red carpet gowns, Kendrick knows how to bring it. She wowed in a delicately embellished Monique Lhuillier at the Golden Globes in January, topping many best dressed lists with her pared back makeup, sleek up-do and delicate jewels, then proceeded to attend each following red carpet dressed impeccably and turning heads for her impeccable choices in colour and cut that made a statement without overwhelming her tiny 5’2” frame.
This style evolution isn’t anything new however, Kendrick’s red carpet presence has been stellar over the past 12 months, not only rocking statement gowns, but also honing her signature style at other events across the Hollywood social calendar including her Into the Woods premiered and the Grammy awards, both of which gave her the opportunity to experiment with a bit of a darker look in basic black and whites, styled just right with glossy hair and just the right minimalist accessories so as not to look to underdone or lazy.
Kendrick’s safe place style wise remains in knee length dresses or skirts, teamed with a higher neckline and tousled wavy hair. Not that this is a bad thing – the look flatters her small frame, and she manages to mix it up with textured fabrics, rich colours and a seemingly endless range of amazing clutches and killer heels (holographic shoes teamed with a what could easily have been a very tired looking skirt suit made it so very cool!)
Anna Kendrick has been a bit of a dark horse in the style stakes, quietly giving other A-List starlets a run for their money over the past 12 months and I for one can’t wait to see her red carpet style continue to grow!
