“Hold your breath…. Make a Wish” were the instructions given as Empire Rose took us into a world of pure imagination at last night’s runway show for the 2016 Telstra Perth Fashion Festival. Our ears were treated to the theme music of eccentric film favourite, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, as the larger than life event launched into a splendorific display of fashion.
Under a sea of rainbow festoon lighting, freshly glistened models carried colourful smoking parcels whilst donning large platinum blonde wigs that were crimped, teased and primped to perfection, a look Makeup Director Hendra Widjaja dubbed the “Urban Antoinette” and fittingly so. The epic collection was awash with contrasts; vintage rock n’ roll tees were given a modern twist when teamed with metallic arm sleeves, denim jackets were given the sequin treatment and a rich blend of textures and prints put all senses into overload. Flares, shirts and maxi skirts in exaggerated shapes created new and intriguing silhouettes for that urban cool effect.
The finale was a spectacle to behold as the ‘Sequin Squad’ descended down the runway in bejeweled veils (by local milliner Reny Kestel), matching bomber jackets and silk pants swathed in all their sequin glory in all the colours of the rainbow. Cinching that quintessential moment, the bronzed bods brigade then joined the beauties as they sauntered through proving to the audience what we already know… real men wear sequined pants.
A sensational evening of fashion, Empire Rose certainly celebrated their 20th year in fashion in style. Here’s to 20 more.
